LO1 Task 3 - Audience for Titanic 1997

Introduction
Hello I am Molly and I am going to be talking about the target audience of the film Titanic. I will be discussing the target gender, age, spending power and life style of the demographic of Titanic.
(John Hartley (1987) and Ien Ang (1991) "Suggested that producers create invisible fictions or imaginary entities before creating a media product,") this tells us that media companies used the invisible fictions or imaginary entitles in order to produce products to suit the target audience.

Uses and Gratification theory
Titanic would be part of the escapism category of films, as even though Titanic is a real historic event that happen, the film also focus on a love story which allows the audience to fantasize about and removes them from reality.
Titanic however could also be surveillance as it is again recreating the big historical event of the ship Titanic sinking in 1912. I have created an imaginary entity which was suggested by (John Hartley - 1987) and (Ien Ang -1991) to make before the produce the film, this is to hell them know specially who they are aiming for making sure that it relevant to a wide range of audience. I have created a imaginary entity. Chloé, is 16, she lives in England, her life is devoted to watching romantic films at the weekends. However also in her spare time she loves to go out shopping with her friends. Her favourite shops are, River island, Hollister, TopShop and NewLook. Chloé loves to wake up and begin her day with reading her favourite gossip magazines. Chloé has boyfriend which also joins her at the weekend to watch romantic films as it brings them closer together.

Gender
Firstly I will start with the target gender of the film Titanic. The target gender is based around females, I think this because the narrative the of film is romantic, this is because the romance in the film is to cater many fantasies for women that dream about the perfect man or having the perfect relationship (02:59:11). An example of this relationship within the film is here. It is also aimed towards the female gender as there is a very attractive actor featured in the film, which make females more likely to watch the films they see it as their ideal partner. Another reason why the target gender of the film is females is because of the actor Leonardo DiCaprio this is Star Persona (Richard Dyer – 1975) to the audience this is when a star is featured in a film which makes the audience want to watch the film. I have created a mood board of the lifestyle  that the target audience might have, and as you can see it is based around teenage girls as this is the biggest target audience of the film titanic
. To back up my idea of the target gender the key stats of the audience is Male: 20% and Female 80% this show the average amount of females which is higher than the percentages of males.

Age
Next I will talk about the target age for this film. The target age is most likely to be 13 and above, this is mainly because not only women fantasize about the (00:34:11) perfect man in romantic films as teenagers do as well which is also know as Ideal partner (Carl Rodgers – 1980). This is also the target age as the love story in this film is light-hearted which makes the audience feel happy and content.
The film is also rated 12 by BBFC this means that it is suitable for younger teens to watch as there are some violent and sexual scenes during the film which are not appropriate for under 12s, however this film doesn't contain any discriminatory language or behaviour which would raise the age ratings for this filmThe age of the target audience is also based on the age of the main characters, this attracts the people of similar ages as they see the characters as their ideal self which is the person that the audience want to be like, this means the audience will watch as they look up to them and they want to know more. Although I have based my target age on the main characters there are also other ages that watch this film for other reasons such as wanting to know more about the real big historic event that happened in 1912, for this reason people from a range of ages will want to watch this film especially the older generation that are commonly known to enjoy history.

Spending Power

I will now talk about the spending power of the titanic audience, spending power is the amount of money a person or household has the spend on leisure. The spending power for the target audience of Titanic is quite high. This is because the target spending power of the audience is A (upper middle class) and B (middle class), this implies that this audience is quite intelligent which means they are knowledge of the (00:00:27) real historical tragedy of the ship Titanic sinking in 1912, this makes them want to watch the film. This film is also C1 (Lower middle Class)  and C2 (Skilled Working Class) because the film doesn't have merchandise, this means that the film isn't aimed to families of which has child that would want to own the Titanic merchandise.

Life Style
The life style of the target audience for titanic are settled suburban's, this is a couple who have settled down with a family and also nest builders, these are young couples who are settling down. I think these are lifestyles of the target audience for titanic as it is a romance which is good for couple to watch as the genre of this film is a romantic drama ("Different genres have different pleasures" Rick Altman 1999). The target life style for this film would also be urban ventures, this is students who live in the city as the main characters are the ideal selves (Carl Rodgers – 1980).
