LO4 Task 5 - Audience effects, Representation, Legal and Ethical and Regulation issues for Titanic 1997

Introduction
Hello, my name is Molly Evans and this is my fifth and final Vlog. In this Vlog I will be talking about two active and passive theories about the negative and positive effects that media can have on the audience. I will also be talking about legal and ethical issues with the media and also the roles of the relevant regulatory bodies BBFC and ASA

a) The product’s impact and effect on the audience
I will start with the first school of thought, this is Hypodermic Syringe (Theodore Adorno, 1930s) - "Media has negative impact. Mass audience believe everything they see/hear." For example the film titanic has violence included in the film, this violence is used to show the distress of the characters and also the anger of certain characters. [VIDEO OF THE ENDING OF THE FILM SHOWING THE DISTRESS OF THE CHARACTERS] This could be an issue as it could be seen as a copycat crime 1992 as some people could enjoy this and want to recreate what they have seen, which could end in criminal offences. The second school of thought suggest that we are able to filter and adapt to content in media (David Gauntlett) this connotes that audiences use the media for their own purposes, this could be things such as escapism, this is when they like to watch something that is not based on their own lives which means they can escape from reality.

b) Relevant issues of representation
In Titanic there is use of stereotypes and Countertypes (Perkins, 1979) Not all stereotypes are negative. The age in titanic is represented as being more valuable the younger the age is, I know this because at the end of the film most of the children get saved from the sinking ship, this was also the same for females as it was known as "the survival of the fittest" because the sailors threaten to shoot any men that attempted to set foot in the lifeboats, this was described as the "unwritten law of the sea," this could relate back to the representation of men (Earp and Katz, 1999) - 'equation of masculinity with pathological control and violence'. Even though when titanic actually sank in 1912 and this was still a very prejudiced time towards black people there was still no content shown in the film which may be problem to the viewers. The high class characters in Titanic are stereo typically egotistical as they have many conversation about how much money they possess.[VIDEO OF MOLLY TALKING ABOUT MONEY] They also wear valuable jewellery and clothes, this could have impact on the audience as they could be offended by the importance of the higher class characters while the lower class characters are neglected, however not all stereotypes are negative as in titanic the character "Jack Dawson" is lower class but the character challenges the audiences expectations by joining in with the high class passengers, this shows to the audience that it the lower class were not completely limited. [VIDEO OF JACK AT MEAL]

 c) Relevant legal and/or ethical issues
The age rating of Titanic is a 12 as this film is based on a true story this means that the film can be quite disturbing as it includes strong sentimental scenes and violence. The intense scenes in this film include a woman attempting to committing suicide in which she jumps from the back of the ship, [VIDEO OF ROSE TRYING TO JUMP OVER BOAT] another intense scene is when the ship initially hits the iceberg which causes a lot of disruption during the film, [VIDEO OF THE BOAT HITTING THE ICE BURG] another scene which contains violence the abusive relationship between a man and his fiancé. [VIDEO OF THE MAN SLAPPING ROSE] This film also includes sexual nature and nudity which may be unsuitable for under 12s[VIDEO OF THIS SCENE] The music used in this film and film trailer was made for the film, the music was copyrighted to 20th Century Fox, some of the songs and soundtracks that are release by 20th Century Fox are soundtracks such as "titanic suite" all copyrights beyond 20th Century Fox goes to James Horner as he composed this soundtrack, an example of a song used it "My heart will go on" this is by Celine Dion, so again the copyright to this song goes to Celine dion as well as 20th Century Fox.

d) Role of relevant regulatory bodies
BBFC are the British board of film classification and are a independent, non-governmental body which classifies the age rating of videos and DVDs, this company has been set up since 1912. The age range set by this company for Titanic is a 12, this is because there isn't any discriminatory language or behaviour in this film such as homophobic or racists terms, another thing in this film that keeps the film rating restricted to 12 and above is the discreet nudity and sexual scenes. The film keeps to the guidelines, they do this by restricting the under 12s from going into the cinema to see the screening of the film. Another way the film keeps to it guidelines is by not selling the DVD of the film to people under the age of 12.

ASA are the Advertising Standards Authority this is the company that supervises advertising across all media. If a complaint is received about any sort of media advertisement it is their job to take control of the misleading, harmful or offensive advertising. The CAP codes regulate the print materials as they restrict people from putting bad things onto the advertising, which means a balanced amount is printed out, on the titanic poster there isn't anything that may be seen a offensive as the poster contains the two main characters together and also the ship.

LO3 Task 4 - Advertising and Distribution of Titanic 1997

Introduction
Hello I am molly and I'm going to talking about the distribution, advertising and promotion and also the marketing of 'Titanic'.

Distribution
Firstly I will talk about the distribution of Titanic, this is the way that the audience can view the film. To start with I know that the audience can see the film by places like the Cinema such as Cineworld and Odeon. The audience can also watch the film by converged technology this is when technologies come together and provide a new service for the audience which means they can watched online this is done by watching the film which has being streamed illegally the streaming websites can be found on phones, computers or tablets, these are websites such as Put locker or MovieTube. However, the film can also be reached on legal sites such as Netflix, BlinkBox, NowTV or LOVEfilm although the audience will not be able to watch the recent films on these sites and will have to wait. Titanic can can also be reached by the people who aren't Digitally Native, these are people who haven't grown up with technology so they aren't used to it (people born pre 1995, this is because the internet was invented in 1991 by Sir Tim Berners Lee (1991) and by 1995 companies started using the internet to promote their company) they can reach the film by DVD or in 1997 when the film first came out, it could of been reached by video as these are easy to access.

Advertising and Promotion
'Titanic' was an extremely popular film, one reason for this is because of the way the film was advertised and promoted. One way that Titanic was advertised/promoted was by releasing a film trailer, this trailer would have been shown at the cinema, YouTube, websites and TV (new media) this was to give the audience as an insight of what the film was about and also to intrigue the audience to watch the full film. Another way the film was advertised/promoted was when it was premiered in November the 1st 1997 at the Tokyo International Film Festival, at this festival 'Titanic' was played on a big screen (New media). The film was premiered to create a press interest which meant titanic was rated which was to make the film more known before its initial release. Most films have merchandise, however 'Titanic' didn't have these luxuries as the film isn't aimed at family's which have child that would want to own the Titanic merchandise, however the film was advertised/promoted in different ways by things such as posters (Old media) these would have been around places such as cinemas and film festivals. 'Titanic' can also be advertised/promoted on websites which can be access via tablet, computer and phone which is new media through this media the film is given reviews, ratings and a plot summary such as on Rotten Tomatoes, this website has given an average rating of 8/10, this is quite high so it will encourage the audience to purchase the film.  'Titanic' would also advertised/promoted by magazine adverts this is old Media, these will include again things such as reviews, ratings and a plot summary. 'Titanic' also is a popular film as the cast includes a Star Persona (Richard Dyer 1975) which is Leonardo Dicaprio, this creates more of an interest to the film.
